Babies, Boycotts and Books: Children’s Literature and Social Activism

Children’s literature illustrates and embodies activism from a variety of perspectives. As Paulo Freire and Donaldo P. Macedo assert, we must “read both the word and the world.” Children’s literature can promote critical analysis around culture and activism, discussions about the rights of all humans, and participation in activist initiatives. One way to dispel prejudice is through intergroup contact, and literature may have the same effect. This session will explore the ways in which children’s literature and activist literacies are inextricably linked.
