In 2018, free speech issues are affecting Jewish interests in unprecedented ways. The Supreme Court’s impending decision in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case will decide whether freedom from compelled speech will protect religious objections to anti-discrimination laws. The rise of anti-Semitic rhetoric online and marches by the alt-right challenge the limits of free speech. So do attempts to censor speakers on campus – often speakers on Israeli-Palestinian relations. Laws prohibiting participation in boycotts of Israel are being challenged as free expression violations. Attempts to repeal the Johnson Amendment may free rabbis to endorse political candidates from the pulpit. Explore where we are on these issues and more.
